  Throwing Game
France - end of the 19th century

A ball-throwing game, the bear’s mouth being the target. The balls fall into the barrel organ which is divided into three compartments showing the number of points won. If was made of papier mache (a fragile material) no doubt for reasons of weight you can imagine the stall-holder carrying his job with him on his back and it is quite amazing to find that it has lasted this long. The bear playing the barrel organ is an amusing paradox which reminds us that the handle-turner was often a bear leader and caricatures the worrying aspect and unusual bearing of this beggar.
